As was analysed in my previous post about Parkinson’s law in action how to be on time with your tasks - just make a more short deadline for the job planned. (we know that all people tend to procrastinate, so this method cheats us.)
But what happens if you don’t fit into shortened time? You are unhappy, emotionally depressed, of course you are still in overall time because you shortened your deadlines before.
The another technique to cope with emotional aspect of Parkinson’s law application failures - to use personal time boxing technique. (look for detailed description at Wikipedia Time Boxing). - Time Boxing works ” by splitting the project up in a number of separate time periods … Each part has its own deadline and its own budget. By incrementally finishing one part at a time, a project can be successfully delivered. ”.
The main principle for personal time boxing is as follows:
Shorten your tasks deadline as usual, but perceive it as box of work. So if you haven’t finished all jobwith first box, don’t fall unhappy, just fix work already done and prepare to start another box . Take a small time out between time boxes because only relaxed and concentrated you could make your task more productive.
This also helps to to curb perfectionist tendencies by setting a firm time and not over-commit to a task.
