How to use positive imagination to achieve your goals and to cope with occuring failures: 3 steps for success mastery
“The mind is everything; what you think, you become.” -Buddha
I have recently read a book by R.Webster “Creative visualisation for beginners“. Author argues in his book about the power of visualisation of the future your goals in your mind, and this visualisation he says can help everyone to achieve his goals.
For example author describes one of experiments held by Australian psychologist A. Richardson. The essence of experiment:
There were three groups of basketball players in experiment. First group had trainings during defined period of time, second group didn’t have any trainings and third group had to visualise the perfect playing and perfect shots during the same defined period of time.
After the experiment, all groups tested their skills: first group, which have trained before had 24 % more accurate shooting,
second group had the same results as before not improved, and third group which visualised their perfect game process and shots, had better shooting up to 23 percent, or only 1 percent worse comparing to the first “trained” group.
Experiment showed that visualisation of their goals had the power to make players feel more confident ant to shoot a ball with better accuracy.
Here we could state 3 steps for self improvement in achieving goals through visualisation technique:
1)To train in and to visualise successful gaming at the same time.
This sounds nice, but the problem as I tried, appeared that if you don’t shoot ball good during training, despite your visualisations, you feel emotionally bad, because of failures. It’s natural. So next time you’ll shoot worse because bad mood is affecting you and your feelings your self esteem and this affects your success.
2)The secret to solve this emotional problem could be the optimistic view at your results and goals. How? - try this specially forgetting bad actions, and by celebrating good actions. Be optimistic after error by saying for example this will pass.
Of course forgetting about errors is not enough. Because You must learn from them.
3)SO after bad action of shot, you must quickly learn from error, correct the action in mind, and visualise a new view of your corrected successful action / shot.
I have tried this previous week in the hall and what do you think? - results were superficial and I was surprisingly astonished!
My shooting from three point line was better twice as before the experiment - from 20 % of accuracy it lifted to about 50%.
