Habits of successful project managers and life - double R principle ( focusing on Relationships and Results)
What is a project? What does it consist of?
without all the bla bla and highly definitions and theoretical approaches, there are only 2 important items :
- people who works in project
- goals which must be achieved in project
It appears that so many successful project managers and successful people can focus only on these too and achieve big results. Why?
To manage people we must know them listen to them help them. To effectively manage people we must focus on relationship centered paradigm. (I will talk about this more in other posts someday). Here is Double R / RR principle:
- Relationships is the most valuable factor. I mean relationships with all project stakeholders, it can be customer it can be developer it can be a man from the street whom this project can influence.
- Results - is the vision we strive for. It is our driving target. It shows us the way as said in Sun Tzu art of war series literature..
As it was again said in LPMA (Lithuanian Project management Association) confererence - project manager don’t need to understand how to make a product or to peek into technical details. He must know how to manage the project to flow fluently. We get simple formula:
Team work on project, team is driven by goals/results, PM orchestrates the play - he is the conductor of orchestra and the leader.
Some curious reader could argue - and there is the process? the project management process?
- yes process is important, but I know project manager who did’t know the process at all, but he get well with people in project team who knew the process and they were lifted up by this super relationships and high reliance on them, - so they did their job wonderfully and project was finished superbly!.
So as in life to be successful - focus on relationships and results. Don’t let the process to override these values!
Good luck!:)
